Strengthening mining safety capacity in Peru
Minera Orex, Peru: Training workshop to strengthen response in emergency situations
In September 2025, Minera Orex S.A.C. together with Swiss Better Gold (SBG), organised a two-day Emergency Brigade Training Workshop aimed at strengthening workplace safety for artisanal and small scale miners working on the concession.
The workshop included over 40 participants, including miners and selected members of existing emergency brigades. It provided them with tools and protocols to follow in case of accidents and emergency situations inside and outside the mine.
The training was led by specialists from the Fire Department of the Camaná province. The first day focused on basic knowledge of emergency care and first aid practices, while the second day prioritised training in rescue under high-risk conditions and the performance of fire control drills, with the objective of ensuring personnel safety and minimising operational risks.
This initiative also marks the beginning of the deployment of rescue equipment provided by SBG, in coordination with Minera Orex, strengthening the emergency preparedness of the mine's suppliers and reinforcing compliance with the Swiss Better Gold criteria on Safe Work.
Objectives:
- Strengthen emergency response capacities of artisanal and small-scale operations that supply mineral to Minera Orex
- Equip miners including members of emergency brigades with appropriate tools and knowledge to prevent and manage accidents inside and outside the mine
Project:
- Deliver theoretical and practical training in first aid, slope and shaft rescue, fire extinguisher use, mine evacuation procedures, and crisis management
- Introduce and begin deployment of new rescue equipment provided by SBG
Impacts:
- Social: Enhance miners’ ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, potentially saving lives
- Social: Improve overall safety culture among Minera Orex suppliers
