Tages-Anzeiger recently published an article by Jorgos Brouzos on the challenges brought by record-high gold prices. The report which includes commentary from Diana Culillas, CEO of Swiss Better Gold, highlights how high gold prices have fueled illegal mining in countries like Peru and Colombia, posing serious dangers to public safety, livelihoods and the environment and present challenges for activities on the ground.
“Our field activities are becoming increasingly difficult because the high prices are causing a gold rush. More and more people are trying their luck in small-scale mining in Peru and Colombia. Farmers are giving up agriculture and attempting to make a living in gold mining. The high gold price is probably our greatest enemy at the moment.”
